The Shadow of His Wings

By Steve Gaines, Ph. D.

Trials are a part of life for everyone, even Christians. Following Jesus does not exempt us from facing times of trouble and distress. David referred to his trials as “destruction” in Psalm 57:1. The way he faced his trials gives us excellent advice for today.

Cry to God in Prayer. When David met with calamities, he prayed with passion (“O, God”) and in faith (“my soul takes refuge in You).” He asked God to be gracious, knowing that as his prayers went up, God’s power would come down. We must bombard heaven with prayer if we want to have victory through our most difficult times.

Take Refuge in God’s Presence. After David prayed, he entered into the refuge of the Lord’s presence, or as he called it, “the shadow of (His) wings.” The Lord will protect us from the attacks of the evil one, as well as from the attacks of man. While others are fearful and falling, we will boldly stand.

Realize the Calamity Will Pass. David discovered that trials do not last forever. Sooner or later, “destruction passes by.” Though King Saul tried to murder David, all of Israel would one day hail him as their new king. David’s weeping lasted for a night, but his joy came in the morning (Psalm 30:5). The trials that we face will end one day, too.

Trials come and go. God gives us grace to have victory in the midst of them. Rest in perfect safety until the danger has passed. Do not panic or fear. The storm may rage, but the Savior will rescue. Be at peace. Jesus will defeat your “destruction.”
